The paving slabs i have layed were lying against a wall for about 2 years. They now have white stains on them. I believe that it is salt? How can i get rid of it?

Sounds like it could be the mineral salts leeching out... the technical term is efluorescence (not sure about the spelling).
Don't try and wash or wet scrub the salt deposits as this just dissolves them back into the slabs.. use a stiff brush when it's dry.
Either way it will disappear over time all by itself
