Why are we bothering with billion pound aircraft carriers?

With a carrier supported by Astute class submarines and D class destroyers the missile has no chance.......whether we actually need any of these or if its just to show the world what Great Britain can do is another issue!

The only reason we won the Falklands conflict is that the UK begged and pleaded with France not to supply any more exocets to the argies.

If they had - we'd have lost.

They could have got similar weapons from loads of sources these days.


Trident is useless. Aircraft carriers are useless (as is the entire Navy).

We'd lose any war that was a couple of thousand miles away.

Joe, Are you saying that all we need for war is missiles then? Why do we have any Army, Navy and Air force at all? Aircraft carriers still serve a purpose as a platform for carrying out air strikes and reconnaissance missions, which would otherwise be impossible.
Note that in the video the Norwegians were firing at an unmanned vessel, with no defence capability whatsoever. Not really a fair test of the missile is it?
 
Joe's right, the falklands proved that modern ships can't be defended properly against missile strikes. (Unless you've got the resources the Yanks can put into and around their carriers)
We can't afford to do that so it only takes one hit and it's game over.
Our new carriers aren't even going to have planes for years. :LOL: :LOL:
And even when they do we'll still be scared to send them anywhere violent in case they get sunk.
 
Surely such a valuable target, as an aircraft carrier will utilise the Goalkeeper system currently in use on some RN ships ? ;)

Ship borne defence systems have came a long way since the use of helicopters as a defence against exocet missiles in the Falklands
