I'm setting up an outdoor 12v lighting circuit. The instructions say don't run the 12v cable near the mains cable. Why not, if the mains cable is separately ducted?

You should keep a small distance between LV & SELV cables. If it is unavoidable they cross, they must do so at right angles.

Segregation is important if the SELV cables are not insulated to LV standards.

Why? Take a guess...

Garden gnomes can walk along the 12v cable, insulating them from everything whilst they chew through your mains voltage cables. The gnomes are only a few inches tall though, so keeping a gap between them will stop any toothy shenanigans.
