Why Slots on Arris Rail Repair Bracket

This is likely to be totally obvious to those who know, but what are the slots for?

They are not apparent on the Mortice Type (and some types of the above).

I always thought they were to give more flexibility as to where you can put your fixings, but thinking about it, why would they bother doing that?
Could be so that you can get an initial fixing in easier, with a nail gun?

It's possibly a manufacturing thing, so the robots can grab hold of or feed them through a machine more efficiently.
