Why is it normal for internal doors to have 90 degree handles and recessed units in the frame. These need extra work on the door and the frame and for what?n Why not the self-centring hinges as on wardrobes and cabinets or a simple push-pull system with a magnet it the frame and a metal plate on the door. If you are carrying food, you can bum your way in and bum it shut. Why complicate it?

Tradition probably.
Britain can be cold and draughty.
Some countries seem to not be bothered by doors between rooms at all.

Once the simple concept of door/right angle handle/ lock on inside or rebated became the norm, anything else became a bit "off the wall"
If you watch Grand Designs, you'll see novel solutions but people expect "normal"

Once you have eaten your food, how do you bum your way out?
You need a handle to open it then.

They have a latch to stop it banging in the wind, which we get due to vents or open windows etc.
Also useful to keep pets in.

But tiger hit the nail on the head, it is Tradition/normal.
You are free to do whatever you want within your own house.

Although could not having a latched door affect the fire resistance of it?

Why not double pocket doors, motorised, worked with a proximity switch in the wall, which open and close with a satisfying 'vvwwwoooom' sound?
