Window frames and door need work

Hello all,

I'm a bit of a novice at painting woodwork. I have some exterior window frames and a door (plus frame) that need restoration.

Here are some of the ropier areas:

My plan is:
- sand
- clear wood preserver
- woodstain (sadolin extra durable)

Two questions:
- Does that sound reasonable?
- How many coats of each will I need?
