WINDOWS VISTA and XP software

My PC runs XP and we have got my son a new laptop for xmas that has VISTA installed, will store-bought and some of my downloaded XP software work fine on the new vista machine,

Some software works OK and some has some issues, it basically depends on the software and the writers. It can also depend on what version of Vista you have installed i.e. 32bit or 64bit, a preloaded laptop will probably be 32bit which appears to be more compatable with older software than 64bit.
