wipers not working correctly bmw 1 series 2006

I was driving home and when the rain got heavier i turned the wipers to full power but it they just stayed at a constant speed. after touching the stick up and down they stopped mid wipe then started again intermittently untIl eventually they stopped completely.
pulled the car in and restarted then engine so they started working again but i can't get it to go full speed and it seems to have a mind of its own.

Any ideas

Also the motor will have a thermal cutout for protection, so if the linkages are tight they may well be loading the motor.

dont know if it effects the 1 series but earlier 3 series cars had a problem with the motor. Grease would make its way on to the electrical contacts inside and cause all sorts of problems, remedy was a partial stripdown and good clean up.

If motor is cutting out at high speed. Motor is heatig up. Don't put at high speed
