would these have a better life and reliability?
Not nessecarily. I had 2 wirewound trannys (the type in a long bar) from B&Q and both failed by the moulded casing cracking under the heat after 2 years.
 
A good quality wound transformer should last for tens of years, although quality is of course the key word. Whether or not the quality of modern wound products are anything in comparison to the 30+ year old ones that we still see in service today, I cannot say for sure.

Either way, they should certainly outlive their electronic counterparts. No matter how well constructed, certain components used in electronic transformers/SMPSUs (capacitors come to mind) only have a finite rated operating life.
