Need some advice on wireless alarm systems for a house.

Been nagged enough that I now plan to buy a household alarm but want to avoid the expense of a professionally fitted system.

However, not sure if the systems with wireless motion sensors are good enough? anyone had any experience of these?

The main control panel can be sited close enough to the consumer unit so it can be hard wired but dont want to have to start to mess up decorated rooms to cable in the motion sensors

I have extensive experience of just the systems you mention. I install them every week often to people who have been burgled and do not have the money in that instance for an expensive system.
They are very reliable and as someone who has the responsibility to make sure the systems are all working under warranty or I get a phone call at stupid o clock .

Firstly you cannot go wrong fitting an alarm as 95% of an alarms work is the visual deterent it presents.
The other 5% that is actually making a noise when needed is provided just as adequately by the systems you mention as by a professionaly installed alarm providing you fit it properly following the instructions to the letter.

I have yet to be notified that a system I have fitted has not actually activated when it should have done.

I would advise against fitting a control panel directly next to the consumer unit though , have a 1m distance between your control panel and the consumer unit if possible or at least half a metre. The control panel has its inbuilt arial for the wireless transmissions and reception and siting it directly next to the consumer unit could cause inteference.
I have never had any such problems but then again I have never installed next to a consumer unit so maybe that is why.
Need any more info about the systems you mention fire away.. :)

..and a pro system rather than a Yale toy, gives a far better visual deterrent.

I have a wireless one fitted and hate it as the batteries for the pir's are difficult to obtain.
If I was doing it again I would insist on cables.
I've tried every shop in my locality and no one stocks them. :(

Just ripped my alarm system off the wall.

My 'Toy' systems as Joe calls them take std AAA or D Cell or CR2032 all easily available everywhere.

I don't think a burglar will care about the brand of an alarm to be honest!

!

I does actually as the would be burglar knows that an established company won't put up dummy boxes - so they know it's for real. With a Yale it could be a dummy.

I've just noticed that Fastalarms dug up this damn thread from over a year ago!...

Why do that? Jesus christ man, you must have been searching through the archives. Don't you think the OP would have bumped his post if it wasn't resolved?

Oh well. Never mind it was good typing practice for you.

:p Fastalarms now owe's me 15 minutes of life! How is he going to repay me? He better have a decent alarm to keep me out...

Sorry , when I post I look at the links at the bottom - If I can add something I do as regardless of wether the original poster has died and been burried underground the information is of benefit to anyone else who reads the thread or who has the same issues... cheers

Whistle is on of those banned posters methinks. Ignore him - he'll soon be banned (yet) again.
