Wireless thermostats - a useful extra?

It's for quotes for replacement central heating. I was just intrigued that all of the installation companies automatically added a wireless stat to the quote instead of a wired one.

Do you have a stat at present? If yes, you could use the existing wires for a new wired stat/programmer, presuming that the new stat and boiler will be in the same locations.

If you don't already have wiring, or new wiring will take time to install because the boiler and stat are far apart, then a wireless will be cheaper and less disruptive to fit.

However, if its a new full ch system, then presumably floors will be coming up anyway. A new cable shouldn't be a problem.

Down to you at the end of the day, but less to go wrong with wired.

As others have said, I'm sure it's a costing exercise.

Fitting wireless is less work for them (no cable running etc etc) and therefore less cost for them. Of course the unit itself will have a higher cost, but they'll just pass that onto you with a markup anyway...

If you are interested to see what difference it makes, (and you already have a wired stat somewhere) you could always ask them what it would cost to just use or replace the existing one. Of course if you DON'T already have a stat, then you might well decide that the wireless one would be better for you anyway as they / you won't be pulling up carpets and floorboards to run cables to a new wired stat :)

Floorboards will be up but I think the issue is that the new boiler is being put in a completely new location. The old one is in the centre of the house where the chimney flue is but the installers have said that new boilers can't be put in that location and you can't have a flue going up the chimney. I'm not sure if they are correct though as i've seen chimney flue kits for new boilers.

Most of the installers have recommended installation in the semi-integral garage as that's where the gas meter is and there are hot and cold water pipes and power. I guess it's just easier for the installers to install the boiler in the garage for me.

I do have a wired stat in the lounge currently but this would have to be rewired all the way from the garage.

regardless of what the installers say will save them trouble, be sure to have your boiler where the condensate pipe can connect to an indoor drain without passing through an unheated space.

You wouldn't believe the number of people whose condensate pipe froze during this last winter, resulting in non-functioning boilers and cold houses. See http://search.diynot.com/forum_sear...tbytime=1&author=&search=Search+Forum&stype=0

I took care to have my new boiler in the corner of the kitchen, adjacent to the waste stack as well as the water and gas pipes.

The flue can go through any external wall or roof, horizontally or vertically. It varies with make but they can usually go 5 metres or more.

I haven't yet heard anyone say they're glad their boiler is in the unheated garage. You need a lot of extra frost-protection precautions, and still have a risk of problems.

I am a householder not a pro

Hmm...the installer said the garage was the best place for it. I did question the lack of heating in the garage - even though half of the garage is integral to the property.

The home survey did pick up on several water pipes not being lagged in the garage so I have asked the installer to lag all of the pipes.

I wonder if he meant "easiest" rather than "best"?

read some of the threads in my Frozen Condensate link, or do your own search. There was an awful lot of ill-feeling this winter. Fixing it after the event is a lot more trouble. Some pros blame the customers, who, they say, won't pay for the job to be done properly
