WIRING A COOKER

Hi,
Just purchased a new electric built in oven with a gas hob. To my surprise it has a 13 amp plug on it - I was expecting to wire it up the same as the old one. Problem is I only have a single socket available that is needed for the plug from the hob. Can I take the plug off the oven and wire it the same way as before or do I need to get a double plug installed?
Sorry its basic but electrics are not my strongest point!

What was the old cooker connected to? If it had its own dedicated circuit you could use that.

Thanks - I will take a look.
The old oven was hard wired to its own circuit - I was worried the new oven could be damaged in some way by taking the plug off and hardwiring to what I already have.

Leave the plug on. The option is to put a socket on the end of the old cooker feed and plug in there!

Problem - took off the front plate where the cooker was wired from in order to fit a socket but there is also a spur coming off this going to a socket 10inches away that is used for the hob to plug in. Can wire up to newsocket but obviously cant fit new socket in due to space?
Any help much appreciated.

Let me try another way then - if I take the plug off the new oven and use the hard wire as before is this safe?

Thank you Steve - so that confirms I need a new socket, so how do I connect that to the previous supply if it also has a spur running from it ie. there are 6 wires coming in the top and there were 3 coming out the bottom (connected to the old oven). Problem is the new socket wont physically fit?

I assume this cable to the other socket is 6mm² ?

Assuming you've got a 35mm pattress where the cooker connection point is installed, then just get an MK single socket outlet and replace the cooker outlet plate, it should fit


MK S/O specified as they state their BS1363 socket outlets as being suitable to terminate 2x6mm² cables into it, whereas the british standard only calls for them to take 2x4mm² or 3x2.5mm²

Sorry - 35mm patress?
I have got a MK single socket but it cant fit due to the connection already there where the 6 wires come in and connect - it seems there isnt enough depth to the socket?

how deep is the box in the wall? you may need to remove it and replace it with a deeper one (for something like this i would reccomend a 47mm one)
