wiring a light

Hi can anyone help?

Old cottage and trying to wire a light.

From ceiling going to a connector, 2 wires from ceiling and have the following
2 red wires in to one opening
1 black in to one opening
1 green/yellow to one opening
another black in to another opening

the light we are trying to fit has
brown
blue
green/yellow

which ones to they go to ?? Also this leaves a black with nothing?

HI Kimsey,

The red wires will be your brown (live) cables - 1 feeding from a light and the other going to the switch.

One of the black wires will be your blue (neutral) cable.

The other black wire will be your switch line (effectively another live conductor). The switch line should be marked with some red tape but, this isn't always done. So you need to establish which one is the switch line before connecting.

The yellow and green would be your Earth cable.

You should connect these into either a ceiling rose or a junction box prior to connecting to your light then the light would be connected as follows:

Black cable (from the switch) - connected to the brown cable of the light.
Black cable (neutral) connected to the blue cable of the light.
Green and yellow cable -connected to the earth cable.

See pic below but, I would consult a professional if you are totally unsure. Better to be safe than sorry.
