I have moved into a house where the pull switch has been removed. There are two cables coming through the ceiling and both have a black and a red wire. Do I simply connect the red wires in the same terminal in the new switch and the same with the black wires?. Thanks for any light on the subject.

Depends on how it is wired. It is more likely the two black wires need jointed together in a piece of terminal block, one of the reds into C and the other red into L1.
