I am fitting a cabinet with lights in the bathroom over the sink. The walls are plasterboard and I want to run a cable to the shaving socket but it is flush mounted so trunking is out. Can I run cable behind plasterboard and is it a big job?

Is there insulation behind the plasterboard? If so is it polystyrene?

Is the plasterboard dot&dabbed to a brick or block wall?

Is it a stud wall? Will there be studs or noggins in the cable route?

Are you aware that this work is notifiable if you're in England or Wales?

Do you know what circuit the shaver socket is on, and how it's connected?

Are you aware of the supplementary-equipotential-bonding requirements for bathrooms?

Are you aware of the rules for concealed cables?

Are you aware of the RCD requirements for concealed cables?

Can I run cable behind plasterboard
Yes, but you may have to de-rate its capacity because of insulation or protect it from contact with polystyrene.

and is it a big job?
That depends greatly on the specifics of your location, on how much effort you'll have to put into learning the things you need to know if you don't already, and in which part of the country you are if you want to do it lawfully.
