Tell me, how do you go about fitting a new consumer unit if there is no isolator switch from the main power supply??

You don't... your smiley face will turn into a shocked face pretty sharpish if you try. Get an isolator fitted by your DNO.
You could ask your supply company to fit an isolator for you.
IF you do it yourself it is notifiable and they will need to come out to remove/replace the fuses anyway.
