Wiring help needed please

Hi all, I'm no electrician so looking for a little help please.

I am trying to wire up an exractor fan. I have cut the end off a standard pc power cable (kettle connector) and the cable has an earth, blue (neutral?) and brown (live?) wire.

The connector box i need to join up has all these colours plus a black wire, and what looks like a fuse. See pic below.

Any ideas what needs connecting to what to get this thing working

Where is this extractor fan going? You are planning to run it from a socket I assume, so I hope it's not in a bathroom?!

I'm also guessing it didn't come with instructions, in which case are you sure it is designed for a 230V 50Hz AC supply?

It looks as though it is a timed extractor fan, in which case you would normally provide a permanent live, a switched live, a neutral and an earth. Then when the lightswitch is turned off (as you left the bathroom which is where they are normally used) the fan will continue to run for a while to clear any noxious fumes, steam....

I think you'll find that 'fuse' is a capacitor, which is presumably being used as the timing part of the circuit.

If that's the case, and you just want to run it directly from a plug then I would *assume* that it is brown to brown, blue to blue and Green/Yellow to Green/Yellow - or is that wire just yellow? the photo isn't clear.

If you are looking to install it permanently then a kettle lead is not the way to go, but it should at least prove that it works.

Do you know the rating of the fan? If so then you should reduce the fuse in the plug to one suitable for the rating, which might well be 3A or 5A. The rating should be marked on the fan somewhere.

It is not timed!

This is a large motor, and that is the start capacitor.

In the pic, put your Live, Earth and Neutral from the terminal block Left to Right as we look at it. Leave the far right terminal as it is.

Cheers guys, tried what you suggested Lectrician, it worked but when i went to put the lid on the box, i noticed the wiaring diagram on the back which said the live should connect to black cable (far left) - i tried it and hey presto, gale force winds - i think its a bit powerful!
