I just purchased a bungalow and the previous owners have brought a 2.5mm cable to the garage.

That feed is then connected to a single socket. From the plug they have taken a spur to a junction box, and from the junction box one connects to another double socket and one to a light fitting.

The CU in the house is an old Wylex CU with upgraded auto fuses( not RCD protected )

Is that configuration allowed and if yes, would I get away with upgrading the existing power sockets with MK Masterseal Plus RCD protected ones or would it be better to put a small RCD unit inside the property that feeds the garage and then use standard MK Masterseal sockets?

Alternative would you install a new CU in the garage that feeds the two sockets and the light?

Depends on what the 2.5mm² cable is supplied from in the house.
If it's a spur from a 30A / 32A ring, then not permitted and never was.
May be permitted if it's 25A or less, but the lack of RCDs is still a problem and has been for the past 30 years.
There is also the question of what type of cable, the total length and how it gets to the garage.

RCD protected sockets are not a solution to anything.

MK Masterseal items are grossly overpriced, and are intended for use outside, not in a garage.

A consumer unit in the garage at the end of a 2.5mm² cable is totally pointless.

The money needs to be spent on a new consumer unit for the bungalow. Not a couple of sockets in the garage.
