Wiring in new ceiling light

I got a new ceiling light but I'm none too sure about how to wire it in - and I realise I'll probably get told to go and find an electrician - my brother is a spark but trying to get him to do anything is impossible, so I was gonna have a go myself.

Anyway, this is the configuration of the existing ceiling rose:

And this is the connection on the new light fitting:

As you can see, I got three blue wires and three brown ones but only one each connection on the new fitting.

Can any kind person point me in the right direction of what I do with it all?

blue on its own requires bit of brown sleeving on to identify it as switched live goes into l.
and earth in earth!!

if the "cup" is big enough to fit over the existing then leave it in place and put small bit of wire from the ceiling rose to the new light.. it will be easier than trying to get 2 or 3 wires into one terminal.

Bear in mind though, that certain fittings aren't suitable to accommodate that many wires - and that those wires might not have sufficient 'slack' for reterminaton......

Certain fittings , particularly enclosed fittings, run at a high temperature which isn't suitable for standard PVC insulated cables. Your photo appears to show heat-resistant sleeving on the wires........


The best way to replace a ceiling rose with an enclosed fitting, is to use a circular dry-lining box recessed into the ceiling beneath the new fiiting to house and interconnect the existing wires. Then it's a simple matter of running a short length of heat-resistant flex into the fitting.

Thank you all. Starsparks idiots guide to wiring was marvellous - I'm afraid wiring diagrams just go right over my head.

I did wonder if the labelling on the light fitting was wrong - I'd have thought S was switched and L was live but as it happens, the live went to S and the switched went to L ................................. anyway, here's my handywork:
