Hi

Refurbishing our new house, we have now built the shell of new extension but the new windows and sliding doors wont be here for weeks. Would like to get on with the wiring of the old house and new extension but was thinking what are the chances of foxes etc chewing through this wiring as the back of the house is left open and they could easily get in. Lots of foxes in mty area. Nothing valuable inside but would you reckon I would need to spend a fortune on ply to block up openings or am I worrying over nothing?

Thanks for your advice

I have pvc flexes in the garden for 12V bollard lighting and at Christmas I add loads more, all over the garden. I've never had any problems with foxes despite then nesting right on top.

I've had problems with mice and rats but that's a different story altogether.

got mice in the house too don’t want them munching on the wiring either

I'd have thought that by the time you get to this stage you'd have some Harras fencing or have the doors/windows protected with ply covers?
You'll have teenagers wandering in and getting up to all sorts. Even taking a dump

Use 3/2 as a frame then plastic sheeting held on with battens to make temporary doors/windows.

Was trying to think of a way of doing it without getting a shedload of ply, one opening is 4.5m by 2.4....

Get a roll of chicken wire or that galvanised wire stuff farmers use for fences for the openings if you’re concerned about animals coming in.

Foxes are similar to dogs aren’t they? I wonder if that spray they stops puppies chewing your furniture would work for keeping foxes away?

I certainly wouldn't worry about it, I've worked on endless sites where 1st fix electrics is done before windows in.

Sometimes builders put in dummy frames and put the windows and doors in very late on - it helps avoid them getting damaged.

I wouldn't worry about animal damage, I've never seen it.

Although one one site I supplied 7 sets of French doors and crows chewed the weatherseal.

It's worth boarding up the openings so you can screed inside -use 3 x 2 CLS and clear plastic.
