Wiring plug socket, 'to functional earth'

Many computer rooms, Radio Test rooms and equipment on constantly powered UPS's require the equipment earth to be 'isolated' from the mains earth to reduce or even eliminate electrical noise.
When I worked in Radio Comm's the company test and approvals lab the Radio Frequency chambers (a metal 'shed') the chamber body would be earthed indirectly via a 2Kw 20Ω resistor to the building earth. All mains sockets and lights in the chambers the earths are electrically isolated. Any and all mains electrical earths in the Lab were connected to the Electrical earth via the normal mains wiring.
In a previous job the electronic kit had an Earth 'Plane' again isolated from the mains earth by a 20Ω resistor.

RE. Pink Functional Earth sleeving, does any one know of a supplier ? I have found very expensive pink insulating tape, but no sleeving.

You can buy heat shrink in small quantities in various colours and sizes

I think there are a bunch of earthing concepts that often get mixed up. My understanding is that the concepts are.

* "High integrity earth" - providing multiple earth paths and/or using larger earth conductors to reduce the risk from broken earth connections.
* "Clean earth" - a seperate set of earth wiring for "sensitive" equipment, kept seperate to some degree or other from the main installation earth. Clean earths seem to be quite controversial, with some thinking that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.
* "Functional earth" - an earth connection provided for functional purposes.
* "Protective earth" - an earth connection provided to carry fault currents.

Some sockets, like the one bernard shows, are designed so they can be used *either* as supplied to provide a high integrity earth *or* a link can be cut on them for use with a clean earth.
