New house. New electrics!

I took the switch plate off the backbox by the front door to have a look at the wiring.

Is this wiring normal and ok?

Double light switch plate. Left switch for outside lantern, right switch is a 2way controlling the hall lights.

Firstly, the two cables had their blue wires joined together with a piece of uncovered connector strip.

Secondly, the common on the first switch was hooked via a small wire into L1 on the second switch.

Is that normal?

Simon.

Depends on what you consider 'normal'. There are a number of ways of wiring lighting circuits. What you describe is not unusual and doesn't sound problematic. Sounds like it was wired by the chippies though !

Uncovered connector strip sounds worrying.

Do you mean a transparrent PVC covered terminal block??

Yes, that's the type of connector block used.

By the way, I ran my doorbell wire through this backbox to hide the wire away. Is that against any regs?

The connector block is fine.

Your doorbell would be ok if you used mains rated cable (bet you didn't!)
