Hi,

I'm doing a small job at home. I live in an old set of flats which used to have a communal bin room in my property. In 1975 they blocked up the room and built a new one round the corner. When I bought my flat I had this piece of extra room included in the deeds.

I have knocked the wall down, over boarded the ceiling ready to plaster and preparing the walls for soundproofing. Thing is I need some plug sockets fitting on the side of the room behind where the old wall used to be and where the new stud wall will be.

I'm finding it difficult getting a spark to run some new plugs round the room behind or under the rad. So far I've been told they'd have to take them from the ceiling light and drop them down or run a channel through the concrete floor, which one won't do cos they don't have the right power tool licence (?).

Now, I'm a plasterer and decorator with over 12 years in the trade. Unfortunately I don't come across many electricians as they've been before I've arrived or after I go. I can't help but feel I'm being fobbed off.

I just want two new double sockets running round to the other side of the room. Is this difficult? Are there regs for running wires near a rad? Power tool licence? Does it sound like they don't want to do the job.

Any advice on how to make sure I'm getting the right info to move project forward.

Cheers

Georgina

You would not take a standard (13A) socket outlets form a lighting circuit, so unsure hat this alleged electrician is advising you on??
There are regulation regarding permitted safe zones of cables that are to be buried in the walls, also newly buried cables and additional socket outlets require the additional protection of a RCD.

Not sure what a power tool license is, you don't require one to do electrical work, I can tell you that!

Thank you. I should ask about the RCD. They've made it sound impossible or extremely difficult to do. Where can I find the regs please?

It is advisable that you do employ a competent electrician to undertake this work, as there are testing procedures that are required to verify the circuit and devices are safe to put in to service.
You can find a list of competent electricians in your area here http://www.competentperson.co.uk/

Have you not struck up any good relationships with builders who you can trust to recommend electricians they regularly use?
