I’m replacing a ceiling light with this Alani one. I’ve removed the old one & this is the wiring that it had. Am I right in thinking I take off that connector block & connect the neutral & live into that little white box & do the wires have to go through that long black sleeve? Also as the new fitting has no earth, can I put the earth into a single connector block & leave it & do I have to tape it or not?

These class 2 fitting are a pain in the butt, you need to put the connector blocks above the ceiling *not inside the fitting* put something like a debox around them.

you just need to bring a 2 core flex into The crappy little connector block and black sleeve.

No you dont need to tape the connector block.

@ben100 , check there is a square in a square symbol I presumed as those connector blocks are usually on the class 2 fittings.

That's the power supply I meant the casing, I think I can see it on the label.

That's it then you can have single insulation inside the fitting it needs to be enclosed in the supplied connector block and black sleeve.
This is a video of an installation of the exact same light I am fitting. As you can see he has taken off the long black sleeve & the earth is still inside the casing? Can it not just be done like that?

Not if you want to maintain the Class II status of the ceiling fixture.

If done like that then it should be earthed satisfactorily.

Ok maybe I’m just overthinking this but I guess when I pull those wires out of the ceiling further they will all be in a white sleeving. I need to obviously separate the earth from this which means cutting a bit of that outer white sleeving on the earth side for it to be able to separate from the other two live & neutral wires which are going into the long black sleeve. This means part of the live & neutral wires going into the long black sleeve won’t have any or will be missing some of the white outer sleeving, is this ok?

You could use some heat-shrink to cover the cut sheath and the earth wire.

I don't see why that would not be acceptable.
