I need to improve some joints in the gate I have built.

Is it true you can use some sand paper, gently rub some of the wood, mix the dust with glue and use this as filler?

Or is there a better way?

Any help appreciated.

Only my opinion but I think this is an old wives tale best laid to rest......we were advised that biscuit crumbs were a substitute too, but they still looked wrong!
Best go for the proprietary stuff, I feel, or use nothing.
John :)

yes saw dust mixed with pva glue can be used, but i think its poor, as said used a proper wood filler, or nothing at all, some of the 2 pack fillers are quite good
