Having just made a shower over a stairwell i would suggest chopping out three half bricks and putting joists directly into the wall then just nogging between them along the wall to stop any twist and allow the plasterboard to be landed. 24 stone of me does not move it....

Or maybe raise the base by the thickness of the ledger, plasterboard under with ply as the cupboard floor.

Or maybe just go with the simplest/economical solution as has already been stated.
