Hello all,

I am hoping to achieve the following look for two windows in our property.

My question is about the building detail.

Does anyone have any experience with such a detail?

Would it be better to plaster/plasterboard the surround prior the making the "window box"?

If not, what sort of insulation or airtightness products would you recommend?

How could I prevent the timber getting damp?

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Ours was done like that when we moved in, although not as modern looking. They had just fitted the windows, then the wood, then plaster up to the edge.

In your case you could probably put a thin sheet of celotex behind the wood and use whatever air barrier you like in front of the insulation if that's what you want to do.

It was just normal wood with rounded edges, kind of like a window sill but all the way round.
I guess it was something like 6 by 3/4 timber and they had finished it in some redish varnish.
It had aged well in terms of condition but maybe not in fashion!
Anyway when the new windows went in we just plastered all round except the top we used pine strip wood from wickes because the top lintel is not plasterable.
I suspect the original was about 100 years old because the neighbours either side have the same.
