Can anyone explain the purpose of the tapping on the fan?

The PCB seems to have failed with intermittent power to the fan.

Is this a common PCB failure on this model?

They are now getting to the 2-3 year old stage when I am starting to see some failed.

Changed a board at only 14 months old.

The low speed winding is used for fan overrun (combined with pump overun).
