Everytime I open Word, and try to type anything I get little symbols all over the page.

Dots between words, a funny squiggle everytime I press return, it makes doing work very difficult.

Presumably I need to update it or something. Is there anything I can do to stop it?

Tools - options - view -- Untick 'formatting marks' for spaces you get 'dots'.
The rest you'll need to experiment with from one or other of the 'option' tabs.
Probably marking spelling and or grammer errors .. with squigglies.
Give it a try ....

it worked! the 'all' option was ticked for some reason. I unticked it, and its fine now.
