Hi thinking about putting a couple of Y filters / strainers on the main flow and return on my open vented heating system. Just wondering if the filter basket comes right out so you can put it in for a few weeks then remove the filter basket and cap off (maybe put it in to clean up a few times a year)

Or if not are these ok to leave in all the time or do they cause too much resistance to the pumped flow? do you normally put one or two of these in

You only need to fit one - ideally in the Return just before the boiler dont forget to fit a valve each side of the strainer.

Strainers are designed to be left in permanently with peridorical cleaning being required - you don't say what boiler you have, but many especially gas system/Combi boilers already have strainers fitted within the isolating valves

You would be far better advised to fit a Magnetic type filter, (there are several makes available) these are more effective and will trap a lot more gunk without restricting flow (strainers can block very quickly!)
Some makes of magnetic filter can be cleaned by simply "Blowing them down" ;)

thanks for that, it's a viessman open vent heat only boiler, is that ok and can I fit it vertically or does it need to be horizontal?
