Hello - hoping that this problem is easy to fix!

The front door to our block of flats has an automatic closing device and, I think, the force with which the door slams shut has loosened the front of the Yale lock (the circular bit which sits on the outside of the front door, and in which the keyhole sits). The circular bit now twists round and round and can be pulled a few mm away from the door.

How easy is it to tighten the Yale lock's connection - and how do I do it?

Many thanks in advance for any help and advice!

Take the lock off and then tighten the two long threaded rods which hold the cylinder on

if it's a block of flats you might consider getting a better quality latch fitted. It will be getting a lot of use, and gives access to plenty of properties.

Can you post a pic of the one you have?

Thanks both - am at work so can't post picture of lock. How easy is to remove the lock - just unscrew from the back, latch side?

Will try to post picture tomorrow.

often there are a couple of small screws on the part of the lock at the edge of the door. when these are undone the lock will slide away from the edge on a metal plate. there will be screws going into the inside face of the door but these may not be visible as they may be in the metal plate that is hidden behind the body of the lock.

if the lock is old it might be stuck to the door with paint and you score the paint with a small sharp knife to crack it off.

An old "traditional" yale-type nightlatch (they are still made  ) is one of the easiest things to break into.

You can buy a much better "British Standard" one for more money, but any lock with an internal knob can be opened by breaking glass or manipulating through a convenient letterbox.

In flats the street door has to be one that can be opened from inside without a key (in case of fire) and that will slam locked as people won't bother locking it behind them.

There is also a big Chubb that has this action, but it is expensive, and so are copy keys.
