Yet another asylum seeker says 'Thank you' in their own special way to the country that accepted them

And yet again.

It's an issue that no government yet has controlled.

Was reading about about El Salvador the other day. Not long ago it had one of the highest crime rates in the world. Not just petty stuff - murder, rape, gang warfare, drugs, kidnap - the whole lot. Typical crime infested S. American s. hole.

Then one day the president decided to go all out on crime in a genuinely tough, zero tolerance way. He turned prisons into places that you would rather die than spend any time in them. He threw human rights out the window for criminals for the good of the human rights of the law abiding majority. He filled the prisons with the gang members, even having a gang tattoo gets you 20 years.

El salvador now has a dramatically lower crime rate, especially serious violent crime and gang related. The point is, if there's real genuine political will to tackle something - any problem can be solved. Our politicians have no will to do anything, so the problem festers and far right fill the vacuum. Politicians = traitors.

Comparing the UK to Ecuador isn't a reasonable comparison, comparitively speaking. All this "tough on crime" nonsense isn't making much of a difference, apart from overcrowding jails that aren't built to contain so many prisoners.

They built new mega jails

That's because we're not tough on crime, far from it. Heck, someone killed three little girls recently and didn't receive a whole life tariff. We have people driving at 90mph in a 30mph zone, high, drunk, driving into and killing people. Sentence? Maybe a few years. We have people walking into shops, blatantly stealing, sometimes literally sweeping copious amounts of products off a shelf into a container, then calmly walking out, safe in the knowledge nowt is going to happen to them. We have police lifting people who've committed a crime, laughing and joking with them, calling them 'bud' and 'mate.' Yeah yeah, it's to ensure they remain compliant.

Now we have the 'experts' proposing people are locked up for less time or not sent to prison whatsoever. I wonder if they're related to the experts that have been advocating the UK reducing its defence spending?

Tough on crime?

Tough on crime?
The right wing strategy:

Ramp up wealth inequality which increases poverty
Poverty increases crime
Then right wing politicians campaign on getting tougher on crime.

In America prisons are large private businesses….who lobby Republicans like Trump for harsher sentences, giving out 100 year sentences for stealing pizza is amazingly profitable.

America increased its prison population from 250,000 to,2 million but crime never went down.

In U.K. the criminal justice system is broken, whilst tougher sentencing isn’t much of a deterrent, fast action can be….it’s utterly ridiculous that people can commit a serious offence like stabbing someone then remain at large for 18 months while it goes to court.

Mrs Motties mate found out she had a half-sister by one of those genealogy services. She and her new half-sister had both signed up to it and were introduced to each other.
'poles' in the family?

It's utterly outrageous that rich serial pedophiles can remain at large/free (even royal ones) until they die...

But money talks ;)

As usual, the liberal lefties have dragged this thread off topic.

Tough on crime?
Remind me about the cutbacks and austerity?

Did it help us or cost us ?

Actually I take it back, we ARE tough on crime. We always consider the victims of crime over and above the perpetrator. Here's a real life example of that:

Yes, tough on crime!

<sarcasm mode off>

What does that have to do with the often pathetic sentences that are dished out?

If you're inferring judges are giving lesser sentences due to lack of prison places, then I'm confident most citizens would be happy for some more of their tax take to be spent on building more adequately staffed prisons. Perhaps direct more cash to this than stupid woke initiatives.

They don't want anyone locked up, we're doing it all wrong apparently. Perpetrators shouldn't be locked up, they should be free, FREE! They need to be nurtured, understood, cuddled.

Yeah but what about the victims and justice for them? Their attitude is 'victims? PAH!!!'
