Yet another mass school shooting in US.........

Although sadly US culture is infiltrating this country, luckily guns will never be part of our culture.

Not really, I actually think American "cultural" influences have significantly declined in the last couple of decades.(apart from school leavers proms which makes my blood boil)

I would actually say most American cultural things are seen as tacky and tasteless.

Would you go into your local asylum and hand patients a gun? I should imagine the answer is a no.
Until there is a way to know the mental state of all Americans (impossible) then why allow guns? The case of this kid was he pinched his dad's weapons. You can't stop that happening unless guns are removed.

22 Mass shootings so far and it's not even half way through they year yet. That's a lot of innocent lives lost, not to mention all the gun related deaths from criminals, accidental, suicide... The problem with guns is that it's just too easy to kill many people very quickly. There is no place for guns within society in this day and age.

The same is achieved with explosives and they are banned.

The purpose of the right to bare arms is to fight against government tyranny and long may it continue.

The 2nd amendment right to bear arms, is an old tired argument used by the NRA.

There is a simple equation:

Is the loss freedom from banning arms a greater loss than the loss of freedom experienced by the 10,000 or so killed each year by gun violence.

Its a simple fact you get rid guns in a society, you get less deaths.

Imagine this discussion with a parent:

'Im sorry your 12 year old son was shot dead by a gun, but his death is of less value than the right of Americans to bear arms'

There was that Derrick Bird in Cumbria, which was the most recent one which was 2010.

Mass shootings in UK mercifully very rare.

Almost certainly due to lack of access to guns.

It's normally loners, kids that have been bullied, kids on psychiatric medication (record numbers in the US) or with mental disorders that shoot up schools. There's normally a reason to explain.

The common denominator is its always someone with a gun

Mass shootings, especially those on schools get worldwide media attention, but they only contribute to a small % of the overall number of deaths each year.

Its true what you say about the profile of these mass shooters. However as Mitch says, the common denominator to all types of gun violence in the US is easy availability of high power guns.

The problem in the US is that guns arevso deeply ingrained in the culture that the NRA is able to maintain its successful lobbying and 'more guns means safer' crazy narrative.

A large percentage of Americans dont own guns, but a smallmpercentage own a great deal.

If you have a society with almost no guns, you have much less gun death.

Moving ftom a society full of guns to one with no guns is very difficult and that is where the US is stuck and will be, maybe forever.

A large percentage of Americans dont own guns, but a smallmpercentage own a great deal.
But some of the ones without have a strange mindset.

We've visited relatives a couple of times in massachusetts, and although they didn't own guns (they were scared of them), they felt safer because their neighbours had them o_O
We no longer go to America because travelling around we didn't like the 'vibe'!

If you have a society with almost no guns, you have much less gun death.
Not always necessarily so.

Many European countries have far higher gun ownership than the UK, and yet gun crime is similar/less.

But America is a bizarre place.
You can't at present bet on a sporting event, and yet you can play russian roulette simply by going to school!

Switzerland is often cited by NRA as an example of high gun ownership and low death rate.

But Switzerland has high levels of gun control. For eg: concealed carry; illegal, guns in public areas: illegal, you cant stop fot a coffee on your way to the range with your gun in your pocket.

Personal ownership of guns in Switzerland is going down.

And Switzerland also has a high rate of gun violence compared with other European countries.

Whichever way the arguments are carved up, the bottom line is that there is a direct correlation between gun ownership and gun violence.
