I've been offered a good deal on a Metrel 61577 tester, but I've never come across one before. I've seen guys using flukes and meggers etc but never even heard of Metrel are they any good ???

I know it's probably not in the same league as the big boys but any good as a first multifunction tester ???

Any advice appreciated

Don't know what the MFT bit refers to....I have a 61577 and it's OK for me.

My only advice would be to exercise caution when testing RCD's. If you do it via a circuit, it may give false or distorted readings, eg, failing the 1/2 or 5 x test.

This is often due to appliances in circuit & the only way forward is to test the RCD in isolation (as the manufacturers of RCD's recommend).

I don't know if other testers are prone to this or not.

MFT = Multi Function tester.

Eg: Fluke 1652, Megger 1553.

Generally include Loop, PSC/PFC, Insulation Resistance, Low ohms resistance, Continuity and RCD testing.

Some also include earth electrode testing functions as well.

Are you sure you don't mean the Metrel 61557?

Have you been offered the Eurotest or the Instaltest version?

sorry bit of a typo its the 61557 not 61577  it's the instaltest version. I've been offered it for under £175 with all leads and case, it's calibration ran out end of 07 and not been used since then.

Also seen a Megger 1552 new for £300....... which seems pretty good too.

This will be my first tester (I finish my 2330 in July) and want to start doing some work on my own (with LABC involvement where necessary) and so need a tester.

Megger is always good news
Not used a metrel, Robs the man with those.

Ahem, time for another of these:

I have one too, but I made the same typo!!

How do you find it? The metrel ones I have seen have different coloured leads to the norm and are quite bulky.

Had an Instaltest whilst my Megger 1552 was away for calibration.
Couldn't really get on with it at all and was mighty happy when I got my Megger back.
I would personally spend the extra £125 and go for a 1552 though £300 is VERY cheap for a new 1552.

Yeah, I like my 1552 too
Only thing that annoys me bar the backlight isn't on very long is I keep knocking the test button whilst doint continuity and wiping the zero

True about the backlight but it does illuminate as soon as you start testing for a set period. It's enough to register the reading.

I get on great with my Metrel Installtest....i bought it when i was training so have done all my work with it.....battery life isn`t too bad either but then again...i`ve never used owt else

I really do like Metrel. I too have the Instaltest 61557, and previously used to use another model supplied by the company I used to work for.

Each make of tester has its own merits, and where some testers are poor, others will be good and vice versa.

It's really like asking what brand of car to buy

Basically if you stick with the well known testers as metioned in this thread, you shouldn't go far wrong, and someone on this site will be able to help you if you are unsure about the use of any of the tests :)

Is the Metrel Instaltest 61557 still useful ?

I have just discovered that I have a brand new one in its unopened box!

Tony
