MagnaClean

I've got the powerflush filter (2x magnaclean in series, used when powerflushing then removed) and it really works.

I've had nearly 1/2" of metallic deposits on the magnets at the end of a powerflush.

It ain't cheap though...

Fitted my first one today! Initial test run looked very impressive. In a short while it collected an impressive layer of sludge, even though I'd roughly flushed through the system first.

My only doubts so far are about the durability of the plastic threads on the body - it's easy to cross thread the union nuts. Also the small levers on the isolating valves are difficult to turn by hand - should be longer to give more leverage.

Currently Magnacleans are very expensive for what they are, but since there is already competition from Fernox (Boiler Buddy) I guess the prices will be forced down. I think at £50 or less I would fit them as standard.

Thanks guys - useful posts!

But f*** me I've only just seen the retail price - for this I reckon I'd have to hire it out for a couple of weeks, other nobody's going to go fer it.

Iwe have been installing the boiler buddy from fernox as standard recently, you can get them from Plumb Centre for 78 plus vat including a bottle of protecter

we do powerflush all the systems to an inch of their lives but have found that when we return a week or two later to check the system is ok the buddy needs a cleaning!!

thats one in the eye for powerflushing aint it

dont have a go at me about it I just do the breakdowns and not the installs, been accused of being a armchair sitting know it all once today could do with out a repeat as it cut me to the quick it did :(

because of the high price I'm toying with fitting them temporarily on replacement boiler installations. Long enough to collect any residual debris, then once the Magnaclean ceases collecting I will remove for the next job.

bloody good idea that chris, we have been just leaving them on, thinking that it would be good for cleaning out the system and as an addition to the annual service but maybe there is greater merit in your idea

I would question the economics of returning to remove the filter.

If you leave it in place not only does it continue to trap the errant pieces of oxide that the power flush did not find but it gives an additional reason for the owner to call you for a service every year!

This is a comfortable armchair! ( Nice to relax after getting back at 2345 tonight following the boiler repair in Maidenhead )

Absolutely - a valid point indeed.

Clearly there's an overhead in collecting them, and loss of earning time, but I'm thinking about a trial period so that I can assess (a) what the take-up rate would be (how many customer's would embrace the product and prefer to keep it when I return to remove it), and (b) what I could charge to 'hire' the devices, with a view to recouping my outlay without the customer having to buy the thing.

It is not going to be long before some enterprising boiler manufacturer incorporates a magnetic filter in the return.

Several have hidden a gauze filter in the return.

Alpha fitted a complicated and perhaps not so effective whirlpool debris trap.

Who will be first to fit a magnetic filter???

The Alex Issagonis Mini ( car not skirt ! ) had a magnet to trap steel bits on the sump drain plug. A wonderful idea but not copied as far as I know.

Hm, an interesting question - perhaps a consortium of installers and maintainers who have learned from bitter experience what constitutes a good design and implementation

I have already been fitting one to every new boiler, and stated to the customer it's mine and it's there for the initial period. I don't give a hard sell, I believe in them and that comes across. I haven't had a customer yet who didn't buy it from me with enthusiasm when they see me clean them.

I don't do this to make sales, I do it because I believe it is right for them.

VW Beetle (first incarnation) also - I dare say the Beetle had it first, but I'm guessing here.
