I think it should be called nit picking rather than pedantry.
The insurance loss assesor wll nit pick when deciding if the claim can be paid and whose insurance company has to pay.

When Concorde caught fire on take off and then crashed who was to blame ?

A mechanic working for another airline. A trip of metal that was not properly fixed to an aircraft detached from that aircraft as it was taking off from that runway, when Concorde ran over it at high speed it punctured the tyre on Concorde which then shredded itself and a fragment of high speed debris went through the wing and into the fuel tank.

A few other people carry some of the blame. The designer whose risk assesment of what coud happen if a tyre burst at high speed was with hindsight wrong. After the accident the fuel tanks were modified with self sealing linings being installed.

Reports quoted on the BBC suggest that a large object exited the engine casing. They indicated that it might have been the high pressure compressor spool. Not ideal.
