A general question

I know its tricky answering things like this without seeing the setup, but as I have no experience with electrics I just dont want to get ripped off.

I have some things that need sorting:

1. replace an old mains fuse box (the one with the fuse wires etc) with a more modern slimline one with the trip switches.

2. Wall socket needs replacing

3. Wall socket needs to be converted from old immersion heater plug in to a regular electrical socket.

Any idea roughly how much I should pay someone to do this kind of stuff. As I say know its hard but is it more like 100 quid or 400?

Appreciate any kind of guide. House is fairly modern about 25 years old.

Obviously theres a lot of variables involved, but certainly you won't be looking at the £100 end of the scale , depending on the extent of the work required, it might even be more than £400!

I suggest you get someone out to have a look at the condition of your existing installation and prepare you a quote

"slimline" lol. Modern CU's are a lot bigger than the old Wylex rewireables.

I'll charge you £25 to change a socket. £50 for both.

The CU involves changing the heart of your electrical system. Changing this may throw up all sorts of problems. Your house may not have been rewired for a very long time, and the circuits may not stand up to testing. They will need to be tested if the spark does his job right.

if you had any change out of £500 I would be surprised, especially in London

Get 3 quotes and see what the electricians offer, cheapest is not necessarily the best.

A periodic inspection and test (PIR) before changing the CU would be prudent, as the new CU with RCDs will trip if the rest of the wiring is not up to scratch, and if you change the fuse board without testing you could be forced into expensive remedial work to make it right.

Blimey, does that include your travel costs?

Seriously though, a PIR is essential on an installation of this age. It is possible that the cabling may still be serviceable but the lighting circuits may have been installed without an earth. That would need an upgrade.

Talk to a few registered sparks and get some quotes. Either use recommended sparks or get some at www.competentperson.co.uk

A 25 year old installation should be in good condition. Even so, replacing a fusebox will be at least 300 - 400. If there are problems with the installation it could be a lot more.

The sockets won't be much, assuming it it just a straight swap.

£100 is completely unrealistic - that won't even cover the parts.
