Hi

I need to get the small plastic threaded piece that the water supply screws to as it is chewed at the end and I want to cut off the end and put it back, the problem is it is one of the cisterns were the lid does not lift off, how does it open so I can get at the nut on the inside.

Hope you understand all that.

Thanks

Maybe your cistern is the type that has the flush buttons on the top? Some types need to have this button unscrewed so that the cistern top can be lifted clear as the buttons are connected directly to the flush mechanism. If you do manage to get in, its often best to replace the complete filling valve rather than to mess with the threaded end. Good luck! Cheers John

Yes it has the push button on the top

I hope there is no problem with putting a photo on.

absolutely Bman ,like he says if the top flush type turn the flat flush button edge anti clock wise and it should come off,

and also like advised change the whole fillvalve, the nut for that is on the ouside where it holds it in place and where the connection for the cold water goes,

change it and get a new fibre washer in the copper connection in,

oh and make sure you dont cross threadthe plastic bit
and dont overtighten in the begining.
good luck,

There has to be a way into the thing somehow.....! I find that the plastic water inlet pipes are dead easy to cross thread, hence my comment about fitting a new fill valve assembly to avoid problems here - especially if the water feed pipe isn't the flexible type. Torbeck fill valves are less than a tenner. Cheers John

What happens when you undo this nut?

well if you'v first disconnected the mains,,then after disconnecting this nut only a little water would come out say half a cup full at mostand this would release the valve,

Is there no nut on the inside like the older cisterns? If I undo this nut the plastic screw thread will just drop out? if it will that would solve all the problems I think.

you undo the plastic nut and it comes out from the inside, have you tried undoing the button on top :?: is there only one button on top and not two one for short flush and one for full flush :?:

What do you mean it comes out from the inside :?: It only has the one button, and I have tried turning it but it does not seem to move, although I am a bit afraid of breaking it.

If the nut's on the outside, then the 'bolt' (what a technical term :)) is on the inside. Once the lid is off, you undo the nut off the valve tail, and remove the valve from inside the cistern.

If the valve tail is plastic, you need a rubber washer. If you try to use a fibre one, you'll strip the thread before you get it tight enough not to leak.

There's no such thing as a 'sealed' cistern, all of them open up for maintenance one way or another, some are easier than others.

If there is a push button on top, it will either be on a cable or it will unscrew to allow the lid to be taken off.

Good luck!

Many thanks for all the help, could not get the push button to unscrew and was afraid of breaking it so I cheated and took the cistern off the toilet,

cut off the the chewed bit of plastic thread filed it square, put on the new tap connector, put the cistern back onto the toilet connected all the push fitting 15mm pipe and it worked.

BUT

when the cistern filled up the water just kept flowing down the pan, it was really starting to p**s me off. well it took a quite a bit of force I actually thought it had snapped but the ferrell around the push button did unscrew and the lid came off.
When I turned the water on and flushed the toilet the plastic piece that that does the same job as the old ball cock was jammed against the side and did not rise with the water (it must of happened when I was tightening the tap connector) it was just a matter of holding the nut with spanner and turning the shaft until it was free.

Now it all works like a dream again

Sorry if this explanation is a bit long but I hope this might help someone else in the future.

So once again thanks for all your advice, it was much appreciated.

Kenny
