Battery dead? can't get started??

My VW Golf 2.0 has stood on my drive for the past week, with what i thought was a dead battery (prob is) but now can't get started even off a jump?

When i turn the key it sluggishly turns, clicks and nothing...it has been stood a week whilst i had access to another car, and wasnt there..

This has happened 3 times this year whereby it wouldnt start, but has been jumped fine so obviosuly knew that the battery was dying?

I just wanted to start up to get somewhere to get the battery, changed etc..and i'll be fine

Could I persist with jump leads to get this going and will it go in the end? or is it stranded?

How long should you run the good car for on a jump? we didnt run that long and friend gave up - if its quite drained, will a longer "charge" get it going?

Are you using jump leads of suitable capacity? are the connections to each battery firm?
Do you have the engine of the car providing the jump start running? (you should)
Once you do manage to get the car going, take it for a run of at least half an hour, motorway speed if possible.

Thanks, Yes I have used these jump leads before and they have been ok...

So I should have the good car running WHILST connecting the leads to the dead car? is that dangerous?

Not dangerous, second car should be running at a fast tickover speed, it's the way I have been doing it for the last 30 years.

Keep your car with the ignition off and the donor car running, this will supply some juicce to your dead battery first then switch your ignition on.

as said make sure the connections are sound first and then let the donor car run for 5 minutes to put some life back in the battery before trying to start it
