Since 2100 tonight (hes had all day) hes been scraping the wall, dropping things on his wooden floor (not even a floating/laminate floor, just bare floorboards), and generally being a pr1ck.
Needless to say I made the same noise and all is good just now.
Mine used to do it till 11.00pm when he first moved in.
It was in a bad way.
After asking him to quieten it down, not stop, after 9.00pm he put layers of foam down in case he dropped anything and after finishing bought the wife a massive boquet of flowers as an apology.
Cheers guys, i personally like my DIY, but I would only ever carry it out between 0900-1700 Mon - Fri, 1100-1700 SAT, and if I have to, 1200-1700 on a sunday, but cant recall the lst time i did DIY on a SUnday.
We have already had a confrontation when we first moved in, he thought he would start plastering/laying tiles, on the party wall right next to our bedroom at 00:10. Needless to say the hammer was brought out and a couple of whacks on the wall, followed by me banging on his door, with him looking amazed and wondered what all the fuss was about.
About a month before we started our DIY loft conversion we wrote to our neighbours at either side to explain what we were doing and to apologise in advance for any noise. In all honesty much of the work i've been doing hasn't been particularly noisy anyway but i wouldn't make any noise after 9pm at night, and only very rarely after 8pm at night - when i'm in the middle of something i want to get finished. They've been very good about it and when i've asked them about it they tell me they've not heard anything at all (our party walls are over 500mm thick) and yet the other day the guy from two doors down said he can't wait til we've finished the work and the banging stops. I can't understand why the people next door can't hear anything, i'm doing the work and i can't hear anything, but the old guy two doors down is fed up of the noise??
Some people are just born to complain and as long as you are not banging constantly all day, every day and consistently late into the evening, i think people should just get on with it. Regarding your neighbour - 21:40 is rather late and perhaps just saying to him 'look, i don't mind you making a bit of noise doing whatever you're doing, but is there any chance you can try to make less noise at night?' would be in order and if he's reasonable he should take heed of that?
Me, personally, I couldn't care less, on the basis that it isn't likely to go on forever.
I sometimes work until pretty late doing DIY but keep anything that makes noise to reasonable hours. I did ask my neighbours if they had a problem and was told "You don't need to ask my permission, but I am watching this on Thursday at 7pm" lol.
