Hi all

I have a Transit 2500cc diesel van ( 1998) with a water leak coming from the front of the engine .
When i fill the expansion vessel everything is ok , but when i drive the van for a few miles and then park up the water starts to **** out of the front area of the engine , i have tried to locate where and it seems to be coming from around the bottom pulley wheel which has got three fan belts on it , i do not have a manual for the van so i was thinking that this may be the water pump pulley that is leaking , if so is this an easy job that i could attempt myself to repair ( i have all tools to do it) because money is a bit tight at the moment or should i ask a garage for an estimate to do the work .
Any advice much appreciated

Phil

Aye its the water pump right enough.....the timing belt cover has to come off but the belt itself doesn't - but to get that far the radiator has to come out, and the viscous cooling fan removed too. Not so bad, really, but the fan nut can be very tight and you have to clout the spanner to shift it.
Cheers John

Hello - I paid around £30 from a motor factors for the last pump I did - and it comes complete with a gasket. The viscous fan nut is the usual right hand thread (Laser do a special cranked spanner for this) and I really needed to knock hell out of it before it gave way but I got there in the end - in fact I had to get a cold chisel in to get it going. You might like to consider fitting a timing belt whilst you're in there? Cheers John

Thanks for all your info john , also thanks for the parts link stivino , thats a good site to bookmark .
john do you think that a novice mechanic like me could attempt a timing belt change over , i dont want to bugger anything up in the engine and i dont have any spealist tools if they are needed , if it is an easy job i will have a go but i am a little hesitant to try .
