Daily Telegraph Expert says homeowners can fit own boilers

If only I was in the UK, ( I am currently in France ) then I would be asking Gas Safe to intervene!

Actually, he's correct.
er actually he's not
But there is nothing to stop you as an individual from buying a new boiler and fitting it yourself.

No mention of being competent there. Just a free pass to diy your own boiler. Dangerous and irresponsible advice.
No diyer will ever be able to "prove" competence, whether they are or not.

Not even an ex engineer that's been in the game for 50 years.

below is a letter to me from Gassafe.

I also have a letter from Mr Thompson and the HSE saying that DIY gas in this country is not a problem.

And before anyone starts, I do not agree with DIY gas and never have, subject to a few exceptions.

At last, we now have the real identity of BigBurner or whatever he calls himself now. It's Jeff Howell of the Telegraph.

I am back in the UK now! yes, I could have emailed GSR but my time was being spend socialising, fitting a wood burning water heating stove, a bit of concreting and some other property maintenance for my friend and ex colleague in between.

He was so bothered by no body being able to phone him when he was on dial up that he installer a tx/rx satellite internet connection. Its up to 1 Mb download speed but at busy times it becomes very slow and tedious to use.

This Jeff Howell used to have it in for CORGI for some historic reason but he is clearly not up to date with registration matters and by encouraging DIYers to do gas work when they are unlikely to be competent he is giving insppropriate advice.

if people do take that chaps advice i imagine we could be seeing a few more deadly flues and push fittings on gas pipes. i've seen a couple of diy installations flued into garages and conservatories. condensates connected with garden hose etc. tbh i think the vast majority of diyers won't even consider touching gas or installing their own boilers.

Could do with t o s s e r s like him not egging people on to have a go!

Glad the author is aware of the gassafe register.

Yes, a homeowner can install his/her own, providing he/she can demonstrate competence to do so. This competence gan be gained through the usual channels of training, qualifications, observation by registered professionals, and all the other requirements that professionals have to adhere to.

That is incorrect. A homeowner does not need to demonstrate anything to anyone. As long as the finished job is fine that is all that matters.

Actually I am watching this!

Its all nonsence because he is obviously out of date and incorrect.

Its unfortunate that the Telegraph sllow him to rant on in such an incorrect way.

Tony Glazier

What he wrote was correct. Only the name of the registration authority was wrong.

Define fine? Works?, gas leaking? POC leaking? Gas rated correctly?.........

The person carrying out the work must be competent to do so.....of course many who do are incompetent. Because know one knows doesn't alter the criteria for the legal requirement to carry out the work.......

As long as the finished job is safe and does it does what it supposed to do.

Competence in a pro or DIYer is by what you do. Prior qualifications only allow you to peddle your skills for money, they do not mean you are competent, that is by what you do - the end result.

in that case ill let my apprentice know he can go around working on his mates boilers, fix them and fit em. because if it isnt for gain it doesnt matter.now i find him compotent yet he knows and i know hes way off being safe enough to work on gas aplliances without me making sure he doesnt kill someone.
