Finding Out....

Your kid smoking!

I dont know whether to sit the boy down and make him smoke 20 Marlboro, or give him advice on the dangers.

I am a smoker, so I guess Im to blame for this. (60 a day man)

Ill be a non-smoker from now on. Just flushed 400 down the kazi.

Im already regretting it (over 10 mins now) but Im never having my kids using me as an excuse.

If i can go a waking hour, its a start.

Read Alan Carr's easyway books - did it for me.

Think he has a book for kids too, although the addiction isn't there but peer pressure is.

our 18 year old daughter has a heart problem, and we always suspected she smoked when she was younger. she admitted it about a year ago. My wife went ballistic at her. Ive no doubt she still does though. Your not going to be able to make them stop, but just set the best example you can. Theyll make their own minds up.

someone once said to me, bringing up children is like being a ringmaster at a circus. you watch the man on the highwire and all you can do is shout out advice and catch them when they fall.

Indeed. My old man used to say that no matter how much you might warn a child about burning themselves if they put their hand in a fire, it would only have any real meaning when they had found out for themselves.

Sorry about your daughter and I hope it's successfully resolved.

theyve got to make their own mistakes, its called life. we have the benefit of experiance. they have the benefit of thinking they are young and immortal. We all know which one wins in the end!

Our job as parents is to try to protect them from the big ones. That's why I can never come to terms with parents who sexually abuse their own children - we may fail our kids in many ways, but the one thing that is absolutely certain should be our promise never to s h a g them. But we're off topic now, and I apologise.

feel for you m8,ive got 3 boys the eldest is nearly 14,I HOPE he will not start but who knows, the only thing i would say is tell him how b.loody expensive they are, where will he get the dosh to buy them.ban him from doing it in the home.

Shock her, and tell her you might have cancer from the smoking(god forbid).
It might have an impact and it's only a white lie so to speak  .

your way way off topic

My brother has been smoking since about 14, no matter what my parents said or did he wouldn't give them up. He was even there when my gran lost her battle against lung cancer (as a direct result of smoking!) and still smokes, seeing that would have been enough to put me off.

What can you do?

We talk of banning many things - drugs being among them. Smoking is a totally unnecessary thing to do, there are no benefits, "no buzzes", no "aid to relax" at all. We talk of long-term damage caused by drinking alcohol etc.

Of all the things which should be outlawed tomorrow, smoking is my number 1,2and 3 - easy enough to do by raising the tax on a packet to say£1000. Sure there would be an increase in the black market, but it would certainly eliminate a significant number from smoking and prevent a huge number from ever even considering taking it up.

But this will no doubt lead to the other old chestnut arguments about revenues to be gleaned, the cost to the already stretched health service (although there will no doubt be stated that the tax revenue more than covers this, and helps people die younger thus not requiring longer pensions - joe may take this up as a good thing  ).

The bottom line is that smoking is a very stupid thing to do. And the real irony is that it is smokers who are more aware of this than anyone else

Look at it this way, at least you can goto the pub and stay inside drinking all the time your there, even when its raining.

Better than standing outside in the rain smoking :D
