See top of final ladder traversing the 'overhang' - I wish they had shown just how this ladder is initially held in place, that is before the 'jack' nips up to secure the top end...

omg! He is a legend... but he actually advocates having a couple of pints before heading up those ladders...!!!

H&S would go up the .... errr chimney these days !!

Yep, that was Fred YouTubed, the photos are from a different time - different Jacks - Note how much the ladder rises above the edge in photo, compared to Fred's job (he steps off ladder onto ledge see from 4:05 mins into Tube).
Imagine 1st person scrambling onto ledge with little more than one rung of clearance and no ropes to ladder top.... Some feat to set the overhung ladder - one handed?

it's amazing what people were forced to do in those days just to survive

just had a thought... why on earth didn't the builders of this chimney just put a staircase up the centre of it, and a hole in the bottom for the smoke to get out? Much safer? duh!!!! :D

How did they video fred? What were they standing on?

are the ladders or the fixings always on?, or did steeplejacks hang them up as they went along?

One of the U tube vids shows him on a bosun's chair fixing the ladders. I guess there must be a permanent cable up there for that.
