Im sure this may have been covered before but i cant find it. We are replacing bathrooms downlights that worked with a transformer with ones that are looped from the rose. Hubby has done this before and has looped the wires the right way but it has been tripping the switch and when not tripping they dont work. Please help as hubby is making noises about going back to a single centre light in bathroom!!! i couldnt live with that lol

So probably not the right way then.

What sort of ELV lighting did you have before? Did each light have its own transformer?

How were they connected to the lighting circuit - was the original rose still used, or had it been replaced with a junction box or choc-block?

TBH, it shouldn't be difficult to connect lights to the switched live and the neutral....

Why are you replacing them, BTW?

Sorry but i dont know what ELV lighting is but it was just one transformer for 3 lights.
They came from the rose to transformer. New lights dont have a transformer just daisychained with 1mm 2 core wire

Im changing them because....... im a woman lol and they dont go with the decor now.

Extra Low Voltage. AC below 50V and DC below 120V.

What's the issue with just connecting the new lights to the same terminals in the rose where the transformer was connected?

Should be 3-core, i.e. twin & earth. Even if your new lights don't need an earth there should be one in the cable, and its continuity should be maintained from light to light.

I wouldn't have thought that an LV downlighter looked much different to an ELV one....

Are the new ones suitable for the bathroom zone(s) they are in?

What's above the bathroom? If it's a loft or flat roof, let's hope there are sealed enclosures over the lights, because the decor will suffer really badly when the roof collapses because the timbers have rotted away due to moist air from the bathroom causing condensation up there.

lol im giving up on the lights i think.

the instructions said 2 core wire and they were bathroom lights so id expect them to be suitable

If I was daisy chaining them, I'd still use twin & earth, and maintain cpc continuity with choc-blocks.

The installation instructions for my downlights recommendation was 2 core heat resistant flex. Heat resistant especially if you put loft caps or boxes over them to comply with building regs.

The connectors are often too small to easily fit 2x 1mm T&E cables for daisy chaining, in that situation if the lights are in close proximity to each other it has been suggested to wire them in a 'star' like pattern T&E to a single junction box then heat resistant flex to each fitting.

Alternatively if the lights are spread out loop in and out to these http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/ASJ501.html in twin and earth close to each light with a short length of heat resistant 2 core to the fitting
