Hi,

I have a hole where a fireplace hearth used to be and want to cement it flat to bring it to floor level and then paint black.

I've bought cement (plasticised) and sand and don't know what cement/sand mix to use for this. Can anyone help please?

4 sand to 1 cement will be sufficient!

.........yes, but use screed/sharp/concrete sand.

The question wasnt regarding what type of sand to use as she already has the sand and cement.
The question was purely about the mix ratio.

But if its you that require the info then..... any sand will be sufficient.

And just to educate you a little more, screed/sharp/concrete sand are all the same sand.

of course any sand will do, why wouldnt it.

There are many soft, loamy building sands that will shrink alarmingly and produce an inferior job. The overall finish will be a crazed mess.

Rinsed plastering type sand would be ok.

lol, that seems a bit dramatic. The jobs only an inch thick.

I been a builder for many years and have used every sort of sand you can imagine for every sort of job your can imagine, and ive never experienced alarming shrikage........lol

You are right in saying sharp sand is the perfect option for the perfect job, but the woman just wants to fill da hole with summat.

Shes probly strugglin to the car now with a 25kg bag of building sand to take back to the shop because youve told her she needs sharp sand when she dont.

Trust me, whatever sand youve brought just mix it 4 to 1 and fill the damn hole. Itll be fine.

Dont make the job any more difficult for yourself.

mmmm right. (Dr Evil style)

A builder hey.

If you have to use soft building sand then make sure you damp down the recipient surface with plenty of water. But this will be no guarantee against cracking and curling.

I need to do a similar job - would it be ok to use postcrete instead of sand/cement?

Thank you.
