Hi,

I recently bought a welsh dresser and as a result had to take down one of a set of three wall lights that were on the wall. The three wall lights are all operated via one wall switch. Is it possible to use the cable left from the wall light (which at present is terminted) to connect to a table lamp that I could place on the dresser?

If so would I need a special type of lamp?

I would get an electrician to do the work but I wanted to know if it was possible first

Thanks

Yes, it is possible, How he does it will dpend on how the cables can be run.

If the table lamp is to plug in he will need to put a different sort of plug & socket (5A round pin).
This is to stop someone plugging a hair dryer into the lighting point!

I removed a wall light which was in the way when I purchased a sideboard with display cabinet above. I installed a 3A round pin socket and connected the lead from the cabinet lights to a compatable plug and now the cabinet lights come on when the wall lights are switched on.

I also have a similar arrangement in a dark corner at the top of my stairs with a table lamp connected to the landing light circuit with the same plug and socket arrangement.

Those are 5-amp connectors. You could also use the smaller 2A type:

...or the 5 amp ones make terminating the plug top alot easier if you have a fat flex on the lamp.

Agreed. The old flat or twisted twin flex or the small-gauge 3-core sheathed flexes which were common on many table lamps 40 years ago were fine, but the larger modern flexes are a bit of a squeeze into a 2A plug.

Before fitting a 2 or 5 amp socket you must first make sure that the wiring includes earth wires, in case a metal table lamp or similar is plugged into it.
