Hello,

I'm in the process of organizing some estimates from local plumbers for the removal of the old back boiler and associated gubbins from a house we've just purcahsed. Before they come around, I'd like to get a bit more genned up on what's what.....

Firstly, my old man just had condensing boiler fitted and he's over the moon with it. One thing that jumps out at me is that he has a "land drain" on it which goes out the wall and into the ground outside. Does this preclude the installation of such a boiler upstairs?

Secondly, what's a good boiler these days? My Dad's is a Valiant which seem to be highly rated and I've always understood Worcester Bosch to be a good boiler (although reading some of the threads on here makes me wonder....). We've got 3 Vokera Lineas in the family and they've all been troublesome.... I know everyone has their favourites and vice versa, but I'm just looking for a bit of consensus. My local plumbers merchants are always pushing Sime boilers down my throat but they seem a bit "RavenHeat" for my liking.....

Many Thanks.

i like and fit the worcestrers...not had anytrouble...good customer care etc.
the condense (land drain u refer to) can go to any soil waste pipe in the house. your plumber can advise.
putting the condense into the ground is anyones last option as it entails digging etc.

All boilers are condensing these days (well mostly). you need to discuss if you want to have stored water system or a combi (instatnt hot water..no store) also discuss with your plumber (be ware some plumbers will want to push for a combi as can be easier to fit, and it may not suit your household needs and/or water flow/pressure

I think its about time we had a new FAQ on this as its getting tedious.
Do a search. There's plenty of good boilers out there, but try and find a good installer as thats more important, let him guide you, and as long as he doesn't want to fit a pile of junk then go with it.

Its all very well giving your thoughts for the day.

The reality is that every few somebody posts exactly the same question.

There are about 10 replies from installers who cannot fit any boiler and just stick to their preferred model often based on extra discounts rather then technical performance or reliability.

Just try to answer the question what is the best car ???

Or better READ past answers rather than filling up the forum with things which have been asked a thousand times before.

Fair enough... Although my question was actually aimed at identifying just what a "pile of junk" is.....

If it's tedious to you, I'm at a loss to understand why you're wasting your time replying?

Would you say Ladas were good, well built reliable cars? What about a BMW or Audi?

It's fair to say that there must be good and bad manufacturers as well as some middle ground based on, as you rightly say, people's own preferences and experience. All I am trying to gleen is any that are unanimously rated or slated.

A selection of views of say five people who might answer you is totally unrepresentative.

You should look at past posts using the search.

You would also see that people tend to recommend their employer's boilers too.

You might just as well go to any magazine and read all the boiler adverts!

Its odd that all the manufacturers think theirs is the best boiler, even Sime and Ideal !

I could also tell you which boilers I like but thats pointless wasting my time saying the same thing 200 times a year.

Tony

I must admit I have never installed a Wolf boiler , but they are made in Germany , apparently designed by a Lady , & above all else they are fitted in the Kremlin , so if they are good enough for Putin , they should be good enough for you O'P ??? :)

You could always waste your time by telling people you don't want to waste your time though eh?

because if you read the whole thing you'd see there's some important advice. Choose the installer not the boiler.
Just avoid anything that can be bought in DIY stores, ferrolli, Ideal and keston and your sorted.
