hi i recently went to put a ceiling light/fan up in the master bedroom, the ceiling rose has 2 grey wires.

into the ceiling rose there are -

4 brown
2 blue
3 earth

do i just connect all the brown into the live slot on fan and the 2 blue into neutral, 3 earth to the earth etc?

also another problem is the wires a slightly to short to connect to the fan. what is the easiest way to resolve this?

Are you sure there aren't three grey sheathed cables coming into the rose? I can't see any other way you would be able to come up with this combination of colours and have three earth wires.

Whatever you do, DO NOT remove the existing rose without labelling up each cable and making a note of how everything was connected. If you post a picture up of the existing wiring then we will be able to advise you far more easily.

Connecting everything together as you suggest in your original post will almost certainly result in a short circuit, which, depending on your consumer unit, will (hopefully!) blow a fuse or trip an MCB.

You have three crey cables, one has two brown cores and an earth wire, the other two have one blue core, one brown core and an earth core each.

the two blues are neutral and they go to th eneutral connection on the light / fan, the earths are earths, one of the brown cables on the twin brown cable needs to be connected to the 'live' for the light /fan and the three remaining browns need to be connected into a connector block.

yes sorry there are 3 grey cables.

i did infact remove the ceiling rose when i tried to try the wires all connected to the fan, this was when i realised the cables were a little short. i had to reconnect the rose as it cut out my whole upstairs circuit lucky i memorised the wires as the 2 into the central loop were slightly light brown than the other 2.

there are 2 light brown cables goin in to the loop

2 neutrals in neutral

2 brown in live

3 earth in earth

is that any help?

also what can i doabout the wires being too short?

Yup - it's to be expected that disconnecting it would cause some of the circuit to stop working.

If you didn't expect that then please spend some time learning how lighting circuits work before doing any more fiddling with them.

That's because they are in a different type of cable, probably from a different maker. They will almost certainly be the ones in the brown/blue cables.

It's almost certainly not how it was and almost certainly won't work.

Try your memory again. ;)

Get a proper ratchet crimper (not one of the car accessory shop squeeze'n'hope ones), some red butt crimps and some brown, blue & G/Y heat-shrink sleeving.

well i wired it and its all working now, jus dont have the fan up. what do u mean in regards to extending the wires.

I mean extend them by crimping extra lengths on.

Or when the tw@ who wired your loft arranges for an electrician to come and put that right, have him sort out this light as well.

i will contacting them i assure you. in the time being, how about using choc block to extend the wire?

im need them connectors anyway to connect the the circuit back up.

is there any amp requirements for the connectors?

You could use 6A terminal block (assuming the circuit is protected by a 6A breaker or 5A fuse), although everything will need to be concealed within the fan. You shouldn't use terminal block and then simply push it back up into the loft, unless you put some kinds of enclosure such as a Choc Box around it. I think you might find that, with three sets of wires and two associated sets of terminal blocks, it becomes a little tight for space.

ok idiots gude here we go..

you have 3 cables..

2 x T+E with brown, blue and earth.
1 x Twin brown with ( unsuprisingly ) 2 browns and an earth..

the 2 browns from the brown/blue/earth cables are live.. they go into the loop terminal or a terminal block seperate from the fan or the permanent live connection for the fan, along with ONE of the browns from the twin brown and earth cable..

the 2 blues are the neutral and go in the fan's neutral connector.

the 3 earths are earth and go in the earth terminal.

the remaining brown from the twin brown and earth cable is the switched live and goes in the switched live of the fan.
