Discussion Of The Week!

do you have a supplier for DI 10mm singles in the new colours? :)

but yes in those circumstances you size for the single load..

ok, fair cop, I didn't look first.. I thought they wouldn't bother making DI stuff smaller than 25mm these days..

yes, alright I realise now, you can stop going on about it..
I was bound to make amistake at some time, there's no need to take so much joy in pointing it out... :)

Wow coljack just seen your post count.

Congratulations on 11111 posts :D

This was just a discussion with colleagues.

Should the tails be rated for the fuse protecting those tails (like most cables selected) or can they just be rated according to the load on them?

I guess the general consensus is no, followed by yes.

Should all tails have their CCC matched to the fuse protecting them?
No you may use another type of protective device. For example a MCB. They do need protecting but this could be on the load side within 3 meters of the change in current carrying capacity.

So for example using a block to connect up a shower consumer unit with a B45 MCB would only need to be rated 45A.

The question I ask is where the DNO declare the use of a 60A fuse what size tails are required? 16mm is well within the limits but so many times people try to tell me this is undersized. To me if the fuse blows the DNO should not increase it's size unless the tails and consumer unit are rated to take that extra size.

Indeed, i was thinking of getting some 16mm tails for this very reason (60A supplies). Can't see a problem with it myself. The DNO won't connect up to anything but an isolator around here. For 100A supplies to be put in, the whole building's supply would need to be upgraded, and probably the cables in the road as well, and they're in no hurry to do that!

But for PME I think you're supposed to have 25mm live/16mm earth anyway
:?
